The fair is held in honour of Lord Brahma, the creator of the world. The Pushkar city is well known for it’s beautiful lake and the only Brahma temple in the world. It is said that Lord Brahma,Vishnu and other deities come down to the holy land of Pushkar to take bath in the sacred lake. That is the reason why devotes take bath in the lake during the auspicious occasion of Karthik Purnima.
Pushkar Fair is the largest cattle fair in the world. The villagers and merchants come to the fair with their cattle adorned beautifully so that they can strike lucrative deals. The cattle competitions is the most striking feature of the fair. The camel race is truly entertaining. Other events are cattle fashion show, magic show, puppet show and dance and music performance. The venue of the fair is lined with several stalls offering decorative items for Cattles, like saddles, saddle-straps and beads. Other handicrafts available are jewellery, garments, silver ornaments, bead necklaces and tie and dye fabric.
